Winjum remembered the constant commutes to Fargo after that restaurant opened. and Kilstone Brewing entered the market.Īside from the new competitive atmosphere they now faced, Winjum and Hendricks wanted to stay home in Grand Forks. But they held off, and soon other breweries like Fargo Brewing Co., Drekker Brewing Co. The Rhombus Guys originally received a microbrewery license in Fargo, where it opened a pizza restaurant in 2011. Since opening Rhombus House of Pizza in Mentor, Minn., in 2002, the two launched a now-closed shop in Thief River Falls, followed by Grand Forks and Fargo. Winjum and Hendricks had plenty of experience opening pizza shops. "It was always our dream to do it," Winjum said. The two are bringing Grand Forks its only brewery, a concept that has caught on in neighboring cities and states in recent years. The brewpub also represents a dream fulfilled for the Rhombus Guys, Matt Winjum and Arron Hendricks, who also own the pizza shop with the same name down the street. "The more people use a building, the more people feel it has a reason for being," said Peg O'Leary, coordinator of the Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission. A massive remodel of the South Third Street building's first floor and basement is complete, bringing the 125-year-old structure to its full use for the first time since the flood. More than 15 years and millions in combined private and public dollars later, the Met has now been revived with the opening of the Rhombus Guys Brewing Co. "This is not, however, to suggest that the building is beyond salvation," the YHR Partners report states. What was once a grand theater and cultural center of town became only a "historic shell," a city consultant later said. The building's flood release drain failed to keep up with the onslaught, and three feet of water soaked its main floor. Sitting near the bank of the Red River, Grand Forks' historic Metropolitan Opera House felt the water's wrath during the 1997 flood.
